The Razor EcoSmart Metro Hd isn't only a great electrical scooter. It's a good alternative to a car for short distances. If I have to run into town, about a mile away from my house, I've taken to using an electrical scooter, rather than my car. For one, a scooter is easier to park—many spots in our town have been taken up by open-air dining—and information technology's just more fun to go dorsum and along.

However, if I'k picking something up, say groceries or a six-pack of beer, I'll have to make certain it can fit in a haversack. It'southward for this reason I'chiliad a big fan of the Razor EcoSmart Metro Hard disk drive. This sit-down electrical scooter has a large basket in the back that lets you tote things easily. And, at less than $500, it's a very economical scooter, besides. Equally you'll notice in my Razor EcoSmart Metro HD review, at that place are a few things I didn't like, merely overall, this is one of the best electric scooters, peculiarly if you're looking for a seated ride.

Razor EcoSmart Metro HD electrical scooter: Price and availability

The Razor EcoSmart Metro Hard disk drive costs $469 at Razor, only around $425 on Amazon, and comes with an all-blackness frame and a rear hub-mounted motor.

An earlier model, the EcoSmart Metro, has a white frame, and a less powerful rear belt-bulldoze motor. It costs roughly the same amount, though I suspect Razer will phase it out.

Razor EcoSmart Metro Hard disk drive electric scooter: Design

Overall the EcoSmart Metro HD has a great look. It'south not too fussy, with a simple steel tube construction, large sixteen-inch spoked wheels, and a spacious basket behind the seat. The scooter's deck is made of attractive bamboo, and at nigh a foot wide, was big enough for me to take my feet side by side. Except for the deck, the unabridged scooter is painted black. It looks sleek, merely I wish information technology was also offered in white, like the older EcoSmart Metro.

Editor's note: We did not ride with the cat in the basket, but thought he looked cute there for the photos. (Image credit: Tom'due south Guide)

Underneath the deck is the scooter'due south battery pack, besides equally a switch that turns the scooter on and off. There'south a fender for the rear wheel, but I wish there was one for the front too.

The controls are very unproblematic: On the right handlebar is a twist-grip for the accelerator; three lights let you know if the scooter is on, and requite you a crude interpretation of how much battery you have remaining. On the left handlebar is a simple handbrake that goes to the rear wheel.

Weighing 72 pounds, the EcoSmart Metro HD is not something you lot'll want to carry upstairs.

As with a lot of Razor'southward scooters, the EcoSmart Metro doesn't have a light, reflectors, or a bell. While I can see this as a cost-cutting measure out on its cheaper electric scooters, it's more of an egregious omission on something that's more than $400.

I also wish that Razor had included a quick-release lever for the seat, to make it easier for other family unit members to ride. If you want to adjust the seat height, you'll need an Allen wrench. And, if yous've mounted the basket close to the frame, you'll accept to loosen it, too.

Razor EcoSmart Metro HD electric scooter: Assembly

Unlike most scooters, where all you have to do is attach the handlebars, the EcoSmart Metro Hard disk takes a little longer to assemble. Yous take to attach the handlebars, front wheel, rear handbasket, and seat. Information technology's not difficult, and the instructions are articulate, just at that place are more steps than your typical electric scooter. For me, information technology took about a one-half an 60 minutes from opening the box to riding it around. Fortunately, the tires come fully inflated.

Razor EcoSmart Metro Hard disk drive electric scooter: Performance

I'm non sure if I looked absurd, or if it looked like I was riding a Little Rascal equally I scooted effectually town. Either way, the EcoSmart Metro HD was comfortable, thanks to its large, padded seat. While it doesn't have suspension, the 16-inch inflatable tires and thick seat provided plenty of cushioning when going over bumps.

Razer says the rear basket is only rated to hold 10 pounds, and then you're not going to be able to utilize information technology for huge grocery runs, simply it's big enough to behave at least i bag of sundries.

The EcoSmart Metro Hard disk is no speed demon. With a top speed of 15.five miles per hour, it's more of a cruiser. Its 350-Watt motor was strong plenty to scoot me around at an average speed of effectually 12 mph, merely on steeper hills, it would irksome down to effectually half dozen mph. And that was with the battery at a full charge. When the Low battery indicator was on, the scooter struggled more on inclines. Still, I enjoyed riding information technology around.

I also found the scooter'due south rear restriction to be very ambitious. Anything more than a light squeeze and the EcoSmart would come to a quick, jolting terminate that threw me frontward. I'd rather take difficult brakes than soft ones, merely it would be nice if the Metro'south were a piddling more gradual.

Razor EcoSmart Metro Hard disk drive electric scooter: Verdict

Were you born to exist mild? The Razor EcoSmart Metro Hard disk drive is no hell on wheels, just it is a very comfortable and capable electric scooter that not only lets you sit down on your rides, simply has a convenient basket for carrying things, as well. While it lacks lights or reflectors, it has a elementary, solid build, and lets you cruise forth at a nice, steady stride. It's great for those who live too far from town to walk, but close enough that driving a auto seems like a waste.
